Biodegradable Films Market Overview:
Plastic-based films with additives added during manufacturing constitute biodegradable films. The additives, mostly enzymes, facilitate the decomposition of the plastic. Living organisms, like bacteria and fungi, can decompose it with or without oxygen without any impact on the environment. Proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids can be used to prepare these films. Innovative strategies include packaging films with antimicrobial or antioxidant properties. Food packaging materials can be coated with these compounds to improve food safety and shelf life. The biodegradable film is broken down into smaller pieces of plastic as it breaks down. Due to its chemical composition, it needs specific conditions to break down, such as sunlight or a certain temperature to completely biodegrade. Polyethylene breaks down naturally and biodegrades over many decades, but it can cause environmental issues in the meantime. There are two methods to solve this issue. In order to improve polyethylene’s degradability and biodegradability, one method is to add an additive to its carbon chain. A biodegradable substance such as starch could be used to make a film with similar properties to polyethylene. Corn, potatoes or wheat starch is used in the production of biodegradable films. It degrades at least 90% within 180 days or less under specified conditions, which meets the ASTM standard (American Standard for Testing Materials) and European standard EN13432. Degradation occurs in two stages; first, the plastic is converted by reaction with oxygen (light, heat, or pressure accelerate the process) and then these smaller oxidised molecules are biodegraded by naturally occurring microbes.
The packaging industry has experienced substantial growth in recent years with the increased usage of digital printing, which provides the leverage of printing all colors in one pass, thereby encouraging a print-on-demand trend in the industry. Furthermore, digital printing makes it easy to personalize packaging which has helped many product brands gain a substantial return on such a radical investment.
