Petroleum-based mineral oils can be used at colder temperatures with the addition of pour point depressants. A fuel or oil’s pour point is the lowest temperature at which it will flow. Colder temperatures can lead to wax crystals forming on mechanical equipment, interfering with lubrication. A pour point is the lowest temperature at which oil flows by gravity under specified conditions in a lab test. When a lab sample container is held horizontally for 5 seconds, the oil will show no movement at a temperature of 3 degrees C, or 5 degrees F. Oils’ cold-temperature properties are determined by their pour point. In some cases, it may not indicate at what temperature oil will flow to bearings.

It is not the pour point that indicates the lowest temperature at which hydraulic oil can operate or the lowest temperature at which gears will be adequately lubricated. A lubricant product should never be selected solely based on its pour point. As wax crystals solidify within the oil, the cloud point is approximately the lowest temperature at which cloudy fumes are generated. Oil and lubricants flow at very low wintertime temperatures with the help of pour point depressants, which prevent the heavy wax formation and enable the oil to remain fluid.
