Wafer cleaning involves removing particles or impurities from semiconductor surfaces without altering their quality. Having contaminants and particulate impurities on the wafer surface adversely affects the device’s performance and reliability. Solvent cleaning, RCA-1 cleaning, followed by hydrofluoric acid (HF) dip, are the steps involved in cleaning silicon wafers. The silicon wafer is cleaned using two solvents in step 1. After soaking the wafer in acetone for ten minutes at a temperature not exceeding 55 degrees Celsius, the wafer is dried. In the following step, the silicon wafer is dipped into methanol solvent for about five minutes. Deionized water is then used to rinse the wafer, followed by nitrogen gas to blow dry it. A thin layer of oxide is then applied to the surface of the water to prevent impurities from the water surface from sticking to the wafer’s surface in the second step, which involves the RCA clean method. The wafer surface must be cleaned from silicon dioxide in the final step. As a result, any impurities or contamination on the surface of the silicon wafer are removed.
